Construction on our North American River Otter Pond is almost finished! Workers filled in the structure with cement and it finally looks like a real pond. We are so excited to start working on the enclosure and can't wait to put in our first otter.

After years of planning SCWR and Aquascape Cutson Crafted Pools finally begin construction on a brand new otter enclosure with a full water feature for them to swim, play and learn to fish in. We have been working with International Bird Rescue as oil spill responders since 2008 but our organization was not a member of the Oiled Wildlife Care Network so all the work we did was through International Bird Rescue as their volunteers. We couldn't thank them enough for letting us join their team and take part in their year long Oil Spill Response Training and as a result have been to over 4 spills. They provided a great opportunity to learn what it takes to work at oil spills and made us realize how much our organization could help in the event of an oil spill in Bodega Bay.

We felt that our center would be a great place to stabalize oiled wildlife before transfering them to International Bird Rescue  for cleaning so this year we decided to apply to become members of the OWCN. We can be deployed as Sonoma County Wildlife Rescue staff members and begin training our volunteers to be apart of an oil response team and futher help the effort to keep our animals safe during an oil spill. We were accepted at the OWCN conference this October and are excited to begin our oil spill work under the SCWR name.

Sept 2011

Sonoma County Wildlife Rescue is excited to be the host of the United Way Day of Caring on September 14th. A group of business people spend a day at a non-profit organization doing anything they can to help. We are lucky to have them come to our center this year and help us prepare our garden for the upcoming winter season and stack the firewood we use to heat up our office. We anticipate a very successful event, and we are thrilled to have such a great group come and help us at the end of this busy summer season.

Thanks to Jim Wilder from Pond and Fountain Pros and Major League electric our education raccoons Carlos, Rowdy and Bandit finally have a running creek and pond in their enclosure. For many years we have wanted to put in a water feature in the raccoon enclosure and were finally able to put in a beautiful hand crafted pond. This was quite the project because every little stone had to be cemented in or the raccoons would move them or take them out and ruin the underlining of the creek and a very complex draining system had to be put in because raccoons love to put food in water and get their grubby paws in it and with it lots of dirt. However, we felt it was important for them to have such a structure because they are so water oriented. They just love water and one hypothesis why is that their ancestors' main food source came from creeks and rivers and that possibly they have retained some of those instincts even though their main food source today is food left out by humans.

May 2011

In exchange for the annual open house (Wild Fest), Sonoma County Wildlife Rescue hosted a Member's Only Event this year. We wanted to commemorate all those who donate an annual membership or more throughout the year and show them how their money helps the wildlife through medical supplies to enclosure renovations. We really depend on their donations and could not continue to help the 1,500+ animals each year without their contributions. To become a member and help wildlife through an annual donation please check out our Cash Donation Page

The event was a huge success and we are pleased so many members were able to come out and see the facility.

Thank you again to all of our members. We could not do it without you!
