Mourning Dove Nest Replacement

The evening of November 17th we received a baby Mourning Dove. The finder explained that the she found the bird on the ground in her yard. She said a jay was picking on the tiny infant and the little bird scuttled under a bush nearby. She watched the bird over the course of the day to see if the family was around. Just before closing, she arrived at the center with the little dove afraid that the parents did not return for it and nightfall was approaching. We examined the dove and determined he was perfectly healthy and was being cared for. We did not want to send him back that night, but instead wanted to return him the next day when it would be warmer. He was sent home Friday morning and was successfully placed back into his nest for his parents to continue their dedicated care schedule with him until he is independent.

Pelican, Cormorants and Gull Release

Three of our staff members, Doris Duncan the Executive Director, Danielle Mattos the Animal Care Director and Kristen Reeder the Education Outreach Director have been helping International Bird Rescue Center in Cordelia for the last month and a half. IBRC has an overwhelming amount of pelicans coming through their center and we decided, with it slowing at our center, that we could go and help a fellow wildlife center. We helped with anything they needed and it included washing dishes, thawing fish, intake exams, release evaluations, laundry and more. On Friday September 9th we were asked to release some of the birds at Dillon beach and we were happy to help. We took gulls, pelicans and cormorants to the beach and had a very successful release. Releasing the animals makes all the hard work worth while and we were glad to be apart of this release.
